Permissible when the content is halal and the monetisation method is clean — impermissible when the content, the promotion, or the advertised product is prohibited.
Confidence level: Strong on the framework. Specific content categories (music, modesty, entertainment) involve sub-rulings scholars disagree on.
THE CORE RULING
YouTube and Instagram are distribution platforms with no intrinsic Islamic ruling. Income from content creation is a form of ijarah — payment for a service — and is permissible when the service (the content) is itself permissible. Three questions determine the ruling: Is the content halal? Is the monetisation method free of prohibited elements? Are the products being promoted permissible?
IS THE CONTENT HALAL?
Permissible content: education, Islamic knowledge, skills, cooking, travel, technology, finance (when accurate and not promoting riba products), commentary, productivity, and most informational formats.
Impermissible regardless of income: content built on immodesty or appearance-based appeal to unrelated individuals of the opposite sex; content the creator performs involving music (carries the majority scholarly position that music performance is impermissible); content that mocks Islamic values or normalises prohibited behaviour; deceptive prank or entertainment content that violates others' rights.
IS THE MONETISATION METHOD PERMISSIBLE?
AdSense: Permissible when the content is halal. The creator does not choose specific ads and bears no responsibility for ads appearing alongside clean content.
Brand deals: A direct endorsement — the product determines permissibility. Halal consumer goods, technology, skills platforms, and Islamic products are permissible. Alcohol, conventional interest-based financial products (credit cards, personal loans, conventional insurance), gambling platforms, and dating apps are not permissible to promote regardless of fee size.
Affiliate income and channel memberships: Same analysis as above — the underlying product or content governs.
HONESTY REQUIREMENT
Islamic commercial ethics require honest promotion. Fake reviews, undisclosed paid partnerships, and exaggerated claims are independently prohibited regardless of product permissibility.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO
When building a channel: Choose a niche that is inherently clean so ongoing permissibility assessment is minimal.
For brand deal decisions: Evaluate every partnership individually — a large fee does not convert a prohibited promotion into a permissible one.
For existing channels: Identify impermissible content or revenue streams and work toward removing them rather than using past income as justification to continue.
