Islamic Finance Questions

Ghostwriting is generally permissible. You are selling your labour and transferring the result to a client who then owns it, which is an ordinary service contract - and the practice is old, well established and openly acknowledged in publishing, speechwriting and corporate communications. Nobody is deceived when a chief executive's article is drafted by a communications team, because readers broadly understand how such pieces are produced. The question turns on whether anyone is misled about something that actually matters to them. Two situations cross that line clearly. Academic work submitted as a student's own defeats the purpose of an assessment and deceives an institution that is certifying competence. And professional output where a qualification is being relied on - a legal opinion, a medical article, an engineering report - misrepresents whose expertise stands behind it, which is exactly what the reader is relying on. Everything else sits between, and the useful test is whether the reader would feel deceived if they knew.

Most presales fail on uncertainty before any question about the token arises. You pay today for something that does not yet exist, with no specification you could enforce, no delivery date you could rely on, and no obligation on anyone to build what was described. Islamic contract law requires that the object of an exchange be defined - and a whitepaper describing intentions is not a specification. There is a genuine exception in Islamic law for paying in advance for goods not yet in existence, called salam, but its conditions are strict precisely to control this risk: the goods must be specified by measurable attributes, the delivery date fixed, and the price paid in full at contracting. A token whose eventual function depends on whether a team delivers does not meet the specification requirement. Beyond the contract, the empirical record matters: a large majority of ICOs have failed or turned out to be fraudulent, which is context rather than a ruling but is not irrelevant.

Delegating investment decisions is not the problem. Appointing an agent to act on your behalf is a recognised contract, and a robo-advisor is a fund manager with software instead of a person - the automation changes who executes, not what is permitted. What decides it is what the algorithm actually buys. Almost every mainstream robo-advisor builds portfolios around bond allocations for stability, holds broad market index funds containing conventional banks, insurers, alcohol and gambling companies, and rebalances into interest-bearing instruments as you approach your target date. A default portfolio at a conventional provider will fail screening on the bond allocation alone. Dedicated Shariah-compliant robo-advisors exist and screen continuously with supervisory oversight, and some mainstream platforms now offer a compliant portfolio option. The practical step is to look at the actual holdings rather than the marketing, because an ethical or ESG label is not the same screen and excludes different things.

It depends on what the deposit is doing. Where a customer cancels and you have genuinely incurred cost - materials bought, time spent, a slot held that you could not fill - keeping the amount that covers that loss is compensation, and most scholars permit it. Keeping the entire deposit regardless of what you actually lost is a penalty rather than compensation, and scholars are much more cautious about that, because you would be taking wealth beyond any harm suffered. There is a recognised classical arrangement close to this: arbun, an earnest payment where the buyer may withdraw and the seller keeps the deposit, which the Hanbali school permits explicitly and AAOIFI has adopted for Islamic finance. The practical resolution most scholars point to is to size the deposit to the real cost of a cancellation, state clearly at booking what happens if the customer cancels and when, and return anything above your actual loss.

This is one of the most common misunderstandings in Islamic finance, and the answer is short: no. Riba is an increase paid on money advanced in exchange for time, and whether that increase is calculated at a rate that stays the same or one that moves with a benchmark does not touch the definition. A fixed rate is more predictable, which genuinely helps you plan - but predictability is a budgeting advantage, not a Shariah one. The confusion usually comes from a real principle applied to the wrong thing: Islamic law does require that a price be known and fixed at contracting, and a floating rate means you cannot state what you will ultimately pay. That is a second, separate objection to floating-rate borrowing. It does not make fixed-rate borrowing permissible; it makes floating-rate borrowing objectionable on two counts rather than one.

Compound interest is riba, and it is the form the Quran addresses most directly - the verse instructing believers not to consume riba doubled and multiplied describes exactly the mechanism by which an unpaid debt grows on itself until it becomes unpayable. So interest that compounds is prohibited, and more emphatically than simple interest. But a distinction matters here and is frequently missed. Compound growth is not the same thing as compound interest. If you own a share of a permissible business and reinvest your profits, your wealth grows on itself in exactly the same mathematical shape - and that is not riba, because the return comes from ownership and real risk rather than from lending. The arithmetic is identical; the transaction is not. What decides it is not whether returns accumulate but whether they arise from a loan or from something you own and can lose.

These are two separate practices that both fail, for different reasons. Margin trading means borrowing from your broker to buy more than your capital allows, and that borrowing carries interest - typically charged daily. Paying to use borrowed money is riba, and the fact that it funds an investment rather than a purchase does not change it. Short selling fails on a different ground: you sell shares you do not own, having borrowed them, intending to buy them back cheaper. The Prophet, peace be upon him, instructed a companion not to sell what he did not possess, and contemporary scholars apply that directly here. There is a further concern that profiting specifically from a company's decline, having taken no ownership stake and contributed nothing, does not resemble the productive commercial risk Islamic law protects. Buying screened shares with your own money and holding them is what remains available.

Guaranteeing someone's debt is itself a virtuous act. Kafalah is a recognised contract in Islamic law, it is treated as a form of assistance to a person in need, and a guarantor may not charge a fee for providing it precisely because it is meant to be a favour rather than a service sold. The difficulty is not the guarantee but what is being guaranteed. Standing behind an interest-bearing loan means enabling a transaction scholars prohibit and becoming a party to the documentation, and narrations name the parties to a riba contract - including those who write and witness it - as sharing in the blame. Most scholars therefore advise against guaranteeing conventional loans. There is a widely recognised exception where a family member faces genuine necessity and no alternative exists. Beyond the ruling, there is a practical warning worth stating plainly: as guarantor you owe the entire debt if the borrower defaults, and most guarantors do not realise this until they are asked to pay.

Running a rug pull is theft and needs no separate analysis. The harder question is what to do when you sold early and profited while later buyers lost everything. Most scholars distinguish by knowledge and intent. If you knew the project was fraudulent and sold anyway, you participated in a scheme that took other people's wealth unjustly, and the profit is not yours to keep. If you invested in good faith, sold for ordinary reasons, and the collapse came afterwards, you made a normal trade at a market price - the later fraud was not your act and most scholars do not require you to disgorge a legitimate gain. The middle case is where most people actually sit: you suspected something was wrong and sold before telling anyone. There the profit is defensible but the silence is not, and several scholars would advise disposing of the gain given that it came from buyers you could have warned.

For an owner deciding what to stock, this is among the clearer questions. The narrations on alcohol name a chain of people as implicated - not only the one who drinks, but the one who sells it, the one who buys it, the one who carries it and the one to whom it is carried. Selling is named explicitly, so a shop owner choosing to stock alcohol is doing something the texts address directly. Legal cannabis follows the same reasoning for most scholars, on the basis that what intoxicates in large amounts is prohibited in small, and legality in a jurisdiction does not alter the classification. The situation of an employee is genuinely different and much discussed. A cashier at a supermarket who occasionally scans a bottle among hundreds of other items did not choose the stock and is not deciding what the business sells - many scholars distinguish that from a role dedicated to alcohol, particularly where the person is seeking other work.

Conventional crop and livestock insurance carries the same two objections as any conventional policy: gharar, because premiums are exchanged for a payout that may never come, and riba, because the insurer invests the premium pool in interest-bearing instruments. Most scholars therefore treat voluntary conventional cover as impermissible and point to takaful, where participants contribute to a mutual fund on the basis of donation and share the risk between themselves rather than trading it with an insurer. Two things make the agricultural case different in practice. Crop insurance in India is frequently compulsory - enrolment is automatic for farmers taking a crop loan, and the premium is deducted whether or not the farmer wants the cover. Where participation is genuinely not a choice, most scholars treat the farmer as compelled rather than as consenting, and the responsibility shifts to the party imposing it. And agriculture faces catastrophic weather risk against which a smallholder has no realistic alternative protection, which is a stronger necessity case than most insurance questions present.

The analysis follows the general position on conventional insurance - gharar in the contract and riba in the insurer's investment of premiums - so voluntary commercial cover is treated as impermissible by most scholars, with takaful as the alternative. What separates business insurance from personal policies is how often it is not optional. Professional indemnity is a licensing condition for doctors, lawyers, architects, accountants and brokers in most jurisdictions; employers' liability is a legal requirement almost everywhere staff are employed; and commercial landlords and lenders routinely require cover as a contract term. Where cover is genuinely a condition of practising a lawful profession or trading at all, most scholars apply the same reasoning used for compulsory motor insurance: the requirement is imposed by law rather than chosen, and the responsibility shifts accordingly. Where cover is genuinely optional and takaful exists, the optional policy is much harder to justify.

Advertising is not objectionable in itself. Telling people about a product so they can decide whether to buy it is a legitimate commercial function, and Islamic tradition is strongly pro-trade. Two things decide whether a particular role works. What you promote: campaigns for interest-based lending, gambling, alcohol, conventional insurance, adult content or products marketed on immodesty are promoting what is impermissible, and doing the creative work rather than selling the product does not separate you from it. And whether what you say is true: Islamic commercial ethics are firm about disclosure and against misrepresentation, and marketing that overstates results, conceals defects, invents urgency or manufactures testimonials engages that directly. The practical difficulty in agency work is that you rarely choose the client. Where a role means whatever account you are assigned, the honest question is what proportion of the work you would be comfortable defending, and whether you can decline specific accounts.

Tobacco itself was debated historically because it did not exist in the classical period and its harms were not understood. That debate has largely closed. With the evidence now unambiguous that smoking kills a substantial proportion of long-term users, most contemporary scholars and fatwa bodies classify tobacco use as impermissible on the principle that a person may not destroy themselves or cause harm. Once the product is impermissible, working to produce, market or distribute it is assisting in that harm, and most scholars treat employment in the industry as impermissible - manufacturing, marketing, distribution and sales roles most directly. Vaping is more recently debated but is generally following the same path, with the addiction and the emerging harm evidence being the operative concerns. Two distinctions are worth keeping: a general shop that sells cigarettes among many other things differs from a tobacco company, and a farmer growing tobacco under contract with no realistic alternative is in a different position from a marketing executive.

The shape of the charge decides it. A late fee calculated as a percentage that accumulates the longer payment is delayed is an increase on a debt in exchange for time, which is riba in its clearest form - and this is true whether a bank charges it or a small business does. A fixed one-time charge that genuinely reflects the administrative cost of chasing a late payment is treated differently by many scholars, because it compensates a real expense rather than pricing the delay. Several Islamic financial institutions take a further step, imposing a penalty to deter default but donating the proceeds to charity rather than recognising them as income, on the reasoning that the deterrent is legitimate while profiting from another's default is not. What is clearly available to you is the practical route: require payment upfront or on delivery, offer an early settlement discount, suspend further service until the account clears, and pursue the debt through proper channels.

Yes, and this surprises people who assume any instalment arrangement is problematic. Islamic law permits a deferred payment sale in which the credit price exceeds the cash price, because a seller may price the same goods differently in different transactions and a sale on credit is a different transaction from a sale for cash. What makes it valid is that the total is fixed and disclosed when the contract is made and can never increase afterwards for any reason. Three conditions follow. You must actually own the goods you are selling - you cannot sell what you do not possess. One price must be agreed at contracting rather than leaving the customer to choose between a cash and credit price later. And no charge may be added for late payment, which is the condition businesses most often break. Where you meet these, you are selling on credit as a merchant, which is different in kind from lending money at interest.

Two features make SGBs difficult, and the second is the one people miss. The first is the coupon: SGBs pay 2.5% per year on your initial investment, and that is interest paid by the government on money you lent it. A small rate is still an increase paid for the use of money, and the amount has never been part of the test. The second is the structure. You never own gold. You hold a government security whose value tracks the gold price, so what you have is a debt instrument with a gold-linked payoff rather than the metal itself. That matters because gold has specific exchange rules in Islamic law requiring immediate settlement, and a paper claim settled at maturity does not satisfy them. Taken together, most scholars addressing SGBs treat them as impermissible. If your reason for wanting them is exposure to gold, physical gold, allocated gold accounts and fully-backed gold ETFs achieve that without either problem.

Sukuk are commonly described as Islamic bonds, and the description is misleading in a way that matters. A bond is a debt: you lend, and you are owed the principal plus interest. A genuine sukuk is ownership: you hold a share in a real asset or project, you receive the income that asset produces, and if the asset loses value you lose with it. That structural difference is what makes one permissible and the other not. The complication is that not every instrument marketed as sukuk actually achieves it. Where an issuer promises to buy the assets back at face value on maturity, the holder's capital is effectively guaranteed and the return becomes fixed - which reproduces a bond with extra paperwork. AAOIFI addressed exactly this, ruling that sukuk must convey genuine asset ownership with real risk, and that repurchase undertakings at face value defeat the structure. So sukuk are permissible in principle and require checking in practice.

The underlying idea is sound. A REIT pools money to own income-producing property and distributes the rent, which is ownership of a real asset generating a real return - exactly the shape Islamic finance favours. Three things decide whether a particular REIT works. Tenants: a mall REIT whose income includes conventional banks, bars, cinemas and betting shops is earning partly from impermissible activity, and most screening bodies apply a tolerance of around 5% of revenue before the holding fails. Leverage: conventional REITs typically borrow heavily at interest, and standard screens require interest-bearing debt below roughly a third of total assets, which many exceed. Cash and interest income: money held in interest-bearing deposits produces income that must be purified. Shariah-compliant REITs exist and apply these screens continuously, which is the simpler route than assessing a conventional REIT yourself.

Exchanging one currency for another is permissible, and the rule governing it is simple: when the currencies are different, the amounts may differ - that is just the exchange rate - but the exchange must be immediate. Both sides must be settled at the same sitting rather than one side being deferred. A normal transaction at a bank, an exchange counter, or through a remittance service settles immediately and satisfies this comfortably. So does sending money to family abroad, which is an ordinary transfer plus a fee for the service. What fails the requirement is deferral: forward contracts fixing a rate today for settlement in three months, currency futures, and speculative margin forex where positions are rolled overnight with interest. The distinction is between exchanging currency because you need the other currency, and taking a position on where a rate will move using money you borrowed.

It depends entirely on what the reward is attached to. Cashback from a merchant, a UPI app or a debit card is a discount or a promotional gift - the provider is paying to win your business, no loan exists anywhere in the transaction, and most scholars permit keeping it without hesitation. Credit card rewards are the contested case. A credit card is a loan facility, and the established maxim is that any stipulated benefit accruing to a borrower by virtue of a loan is riba. Scholars split on whether card rewards fall under it: one view says the benefit is tied to the borrowing relationship and should be avoided or given away, while another says the reward is funded by merchant fees rather than by the lender's interest income, and is compensation for using a payment network rather than a benefit on a loan. Where a card charges an annual fee and returns rewards worth more, the exchange looks less like a gift and more like paying money to receive more money.

One question resolves most of these: did you pay anything for the chance? A genuinely free draw - enter your name, no purchase, no fee, no premium-rate message - is a gift from the organiser, and gifts are permissible however they are allocated. Paying an entry fee for a chance at a prize is gambling: you stake money on an uncertain outcome, and if you lose your stake is gone. Raffle tickets and paid prize competitions fall here, including ones run for charity, because a good cause does not change the structure of the transaction. The middle case is where most confusion sits. Buying a product you genuinely wanted, which happens to include a draw entry, is generally permissible - you paid for the product and received the entry as a bonus. It becomes problematic when you buy something you did not want, or buy more than you needed, because the entry was the real purpose.

Using a stablecoin as a way to hold or move value is generally permissible on the same reasoning that applies to holding foreign currency - it is a claim to a dollar, functioning as a dollar. Two things complicate that. The first is what backs it: reserves held in interest-bearing government debt mean the issuer earns riba on your deposit, which most scholars treat as a concern about the issuer rather than about your holding, though a minority are uncomfortable enough to avoid those coins. Algorithmic stablecoins that maintain their peg through trading mechanisms rather than real reserves raise a gharar objection instead, and several have collapsed entirely. The second is yield: any arrangement paying you a percentage for depositing stablecoins is lending at interest, and the fact that it is denominated in tokens changes nothing. Holding and spending is one question; earning a return on the holding is a different and much clearer one.

Most DeFi yield is interest with a smart contract in front of it. You deposit an asset, a protocol lends it to borrowers, and you receive more back than you put in, with the increase determined by time and amount. That the counterparty is code rather than a bank changes who administers the loan, not what the loan is - and scholars are broadly agreed on this. Liquidity provision is a genuinely closer call: supplying assets to an automated market maker earns a share of trading fees for a service, with real capital at risk through impermanent loss, which some scholars regard as closer to a partnership. The complication is that most pools pair with interest-bearing tokens and layer lending rewards on top. Validator staking sits differently again, because the reward compensates work with real slashing risk. The useful question is never what the protocol is called, but whether your return comes from lending, from a service, or from genuine shared risk.

An airdrop is closest to a gift, and receiving a gift is permissible - so the starting position is favourable. Two things move it. The first is what the token actually is: a governance token for a lending protocol is a share in an enterprise whose business is charging interest, and receiving it free does not repair that. The second is what you did to qualify. Where you simply held an asset or used a service, nothing objectionable happened. Where qualification required lending, borrowing, leveraged trading or wash transactions to inflate volume, the reward is compensation for activity that was itself impermissible. A third consideration is honesty: farming an airdrop across many wallets to appear as many users misrepresents you to the distributor, which is deception regardless of how normal the practice has become. Value the token when you receive it and treat it as ordinary wealth for zakat.

Wages do not have to be paid in cash. Islamic law has always permitted payment in kind - goods, produce, a share of output - provided the amount is known and agreed at the outset. So being paid in crypto is permissible in principle, on the same reasoning that permits being paid in foreign currency or in goods. The practical requirement is that the wage be defined. If you agree a fee of 500 dollars settled in stablecoin, the amount is clear and volatility between agreement and payment is minor. If you agree an unspecified quantity of a volatile token, you have contracted for something whose value neither party can state, which raises the gharar concern - and if the token collapses before payment you have worked for something close to nothing. The other two questions are the ones that always apply: the work must itself be permissible, and the token must be one you accept as valid property.

The income mechanisms are not the problem. A viewer donation is a gift, a channel subscription is payment for access to content, and both are permissible in themselves. What decides the ruling is what you are broadcasting and who is paying to be associated with it. Streaming permissible content - teaching, cooking, coding, craft, most gaming, commentary - and receiving donations or subscriptions for it is ordinary income. It stops being ordinary when the content itself is impermissible, when the sponsorship comes from gambling operators or interest-based lenders, or when the stream promotes gambling mechanics to an audience that includes children. One area deserves particular attention because it dominates streaming revenue: gambling sponsorships and casino streams are widespread on the major platforms and are among the highest-paying arrangements offered to streamers, which makes declining them a real financial decision rather than a theoretical one.

Selling advertising space is renting something you control, and that is permissible in itself. The difficulty with programmatic advertising is that you do not choose each advert - a network fills the slot in real time, and gambling, interest-based lending, dating and immodest creatives are all common. Most scholars distinguish between what you can control and what you cannot. Where a network offers category blocking and you use it, you have discharged what was reasonably within your power, and residual leakage is generally not held against you. Where controls exist and you ignore them, the position is much weaker, because the objection is not that you failed to achieve perfection but that you declined to try. Two things sit alongside this: rewarded video that gates progress behind watching adverts is a design question about coercion rather than a category question, and an app aimed at children carries a stricter duty because the audience cannot evaluate what it is shown.

Business zakat falls on the trading assets, not on the business. You count stock you intend to sell at what you could sell it for today, cash in the business accounts, and money customers owe you that you expect to recover. You exclude premises, fixtures, machinery, delivery vehicles, computers and anything else used to run the business rather than sold - these are the means of production and zakat does not fall on them. From that total you deduct short-term liabilities actually due: supplier invoices, wages owed, rent payable. The most common errors are valuing stock at cost rather than resale price, and including equipment that should be excluded. For a partnership or company, each partner calculates on their proportional share according to their own zakat date, and the business does not owe zakat as an entity.

The distinction is between a debt you expect to recover and one you do not. Money lent to someone reliable who acknowledges the debt and is able to repay is still your wealth - it is simply held by someone else - and most scholars require zakat on it each year, whether or not you have received anything. Money lent to someone who denies the debt, has disappeared, or genuinely cannot pay is treated differently: zakat is deferred until you actually recover it, at which point the majority position requires one year's zakat rather than payment for every year it was outstanding. Two things people get wrong. Wages owed to you by an employer, a security deposit with a landlord, and a tax refund due are all debts owed to you and follow the same rules. And zakat on a strong debt is payable from your other wealth if the debt itself has not yet been repaid - you do not wait for the cash to arrive.

Zakat becomes due when wealth above the nisab threshold has been in your possession for one full lunar year, and your zakat date is the anniversary of the day you first crossed that threshold and stayed above it. Most people assume zakat is a Ramadan obligation. It is not - Ramadan is simply when many choose to pay because giving is easier to arrange and the reward is greater. Two rules resolve most confusion. Dips during the year do not reset the clock; only falling below nisab and staying there does. And the lunar year is about eleven days shorter than the solar year, so calculating on a fixed Gregorian date slowly drifts and eventually skips a year altogether. If you have never fixed a date, choose one you can defend, apply it consistently, and make a reasonable estimate for years you missed rather than abandoning the calculation as too difficult.

The common position is that zakat is due on the surrender value - what you could actually receive if you cashed the policy in today - rather than on the maturity amount or the sum assured. The reasoning is that zakat falls on wealth you own and can access, and the maturity value is a future entitlement contingent on continuing to pay premiums, while the sum assured is a payout on death that is not yours at all during your lifetime. A minority hold that because a policy cannot be surrendered without loss it should be treated like other locked assets and left until maturity. There is a prior question worth separating: conventional endowment policies carry gharar and riba concerns that most scholars regard as making the policy itself problematic. That is a different discussion from how to calculate zakat, and owning something you should not own does not remove the zakat obligation on it in the meantime.

Why you hold the property decides everything. The home you live in is exempt however valuable it is, because zakat does not fall on personal necessities. A property you rent out is also not zakatable itself - it is a productive asset like a tool or a machine, and zakat does not fall on the means of production. What is zakatable is the rent you have collected and still hold on your zakat date. Property bought with the intention of reselling is the opposite case: it is merchandise, and zakat is due on its full market value every year until it is sold. Land follows the same logic - held for use or income it is exempt, held for resale it is trade stock. The most common error is assuming a large property portfolio automatically means a large zakat bill; a landlord with several rented flats and little cash may owe very little.

Where you accept that holding crypto is permissible, most contemporary scholars treat it as zakatable wealth at its market value on your zakat date, at the standard 2.5%. The reasoning is that it functions as a store of value and a medium of exchange that you own and can dispose of, which is what zakat attaches to. Volatility does not change this - you value it on the day, exactly as you would shares or gold, and a fall the following week does not create a refund any more than a rise creates an extra liability. Three practical points matter more than the theory. Coins held to trade and coins held long term are treated the same way here, because unlike shares there is no underlying company balance sheet to look through to. Staking and lending rewards should be assessed separately, since scholars who regard them as interest-like would purify rather than zakat them. And crypto held on an exchange you do not control is still yours for zakat purposes.

Automation does not change a transaction's ruling. A bot that buys Shariah-screened shares on spot settlement with no leverage is doing permissible trading faster than you would; a bot running leveraged perpetual futures is doing impermissible trading faster than you would. So the question is never whether the software is halal - it is what the software actually does. Four things decide it: whether the underlying asset passes screening, whether the strategy borrows at interest for leverage, whether trades settle with real ownership rather than cash-settled contracts for difference, and whether the holding period is so short that profit comes purely from speed rather than any assessment of value. Copy trading adds one more consideration: you remain responsible for what the person you follow is doing, and most scholars regard delegating the decision as not delegating the accountability. Marketing that describes a bot as halal is not a substitute for checking those four things yourself.

There is a clean line here and it is easy to apply. Buying a specific item for a stated price - a skin you can see, a battle pass with a listed reward track, extra levels, an ad-free upgrade - is an ordinary sale of a digital good. You know what you are paying and what you are getting, so the contract is defined and most scholars permit it. A loot box is different in kind. You pay a known amount for an unknown outcome determined by chance, and you may receive something of high value or nothing you wanted. That is paying money on a random result, which is the structure of maysir, and it is also gharar in its clearest form since the object of the sale is undefined at the moment of purchase. Several governments have reached the same conclusion for consumer protection reasons and regulated loot boxes as gambling. Where in-game items can be traded for real money, the resemblance is closer still.

These are two separate questions with opposite answers. An interest-bearing wedding loan is riba, and the necessity argument does not rescue it - necessity in Islamic law covers preserving life, health or protection from serious harm, and a wedding at a particular scale is not that. Marriage itself is encouraged, but the expenditure surrounding it in South Asian custom is culture rather than religion, and the Prophetic guidance points firmly toward simplicity: the most blessed marriage is the one with the least burden. Deferred mahr is the opposite case. Paying mahr later, or in instalments, is explicitly permitted and was practised from the earliest period. Mahr is a genuine debt owed to the wife, it belongs to her alone and not to her family, and any amount is valid provided she consented to it knowingly. What is not acceptable is a nominal mahr recorded to satisfy a formality with no intention to pay, or deferral used indefinitely so the obligation is never discharged.

Islamic inheritance shares are fixed by the Quran and are not yours to redistribute, which is why an Islamic will works differently from an ordinary one. You cannot use it to decide who gets what among your heirs - those proportions are already set. What a will does is ensure the fixed shares are actually applied, which matters enormously if you live somewhere the default law would distribute your estate differently. In the UK, dying without a will means the intestacy rules apply, and they do not match Islamic shares. In India, Muslim Personal Law governs, but a will still prevents disputes and lets you direct the discretionary third. That third is the part you can direct: you may bequeath up to one third of your estate to people who are not heirs, or to charity, and the Prophetic guidance is that a third is already generous. What you cannot do is bequeath to an existing heir, or exceed the third, without the other heirs consenting after your death.

The structure decides it, and there are two very different structures sharing one name. A simple rotating committee - everyone contributes the same amount each month, one member receives the whole pot each month chosen by lot, and everyone eventually receives exactly what they put in - is permissible and widely practised. Nobody gains more than they contributed and nobody loses, so there is no increase to characterise as riba. The registered bidding chit fund common in India is different. Members bid to receive the pot early, accepting a discount, and that discount is distributed among the others. The person taking money early receives less than they will repay, and those waiting receive more than they contributed - which is an increase for time, distributed among the participants rather than paid to a bank. Darul Uloom Deoband and other Indian institutions have addressed this directly, and Shariah-compliant chit schemes have been established in India using a zero-bidding model.

Two separate things are happening in a gold loan and only one of them is a problem. Pledging your gold as security for a debt is permissible - the Prophet, peace be upon him, pledged his armour to a Jewish merchant for food bought on credit, which establishes collateralised borrowing clearly. The difficulty is the loan itself. A conventional gold loan advances cash against the pledge and charges interest on it, usually at a substantially lower rate than an unsecured loan because the lender's risk is covered. That interest is riba, and the fact that the rate is low or the security is your own property does not change the character of the increase. Two further problems compound it: the lender takes possession of your gold and may benefit from holding it, and default clauses often allow sale at a valuation you cannot contest. Where a genuine emergency exists and no alternative is available, some scholars discuss necessity, but a gold loan for consumption or business expansion does not meet that bar.

Both platforms sell the same thing in different packaging: a return generated by money lent rather than by any asset or enterprise. In P2P lending you lend to a borrower and receive more back, which is riba with a technology layer in front of it - the absence of a bank does not change the transaction. Invoice discounting is subtler and often marketed as trade finance, but the standard structure has you buy a receivable at a discount and collect its full face value, which is selling a debt for less than its amount. Classical scholarship treats the sale of debt at a discount as riba, because a debt of 100,000 exchanged for 90,000 cash is an unequal exchange of money for money with a deferral. What genuinely changes the analysis is risk: an arrangement where you own goods, bear the risk of their loss and profit from selling them is trade, not lending. Islamic trade finance structures exist that do exactly this.

Public sector schemes like the NHS and civil service pensions are defined benefit arrangements, and most scholars treat them differently from ordinary investment. Your eventual pension is calculated from your salary and years of service under a formula - it is not a share of an investment pot. You do not choose the investments, you do not bear the investment risk, and the amount you receive does not depend on what the fund earned. On that basis most scholars regard the pension as deferred salary: a contractual entitlement to be paid later for work done now. The practical consequence is significant. Because you never owned or directed the underlying investments, most scholars hold you are not required to purify your pension income for what the scheme invested in. This differs sharply from a defined contribution workplace pension, where you do own a pot, you can usually choose the funds, and the default fund is almost always unscreened - there, switching to a Shariah fund matters and most large UK providers now offer one.

Quantitative finance is not one job, and the answer changes completely depending on which one you have. The decisive question is what your models actually cause to happen. If your work prices interest rate derivatives, builds options pricing engines, optimises leveraged positions or runs strategies whose profit comes from speculative churn, you are directly enabling transactions that contemporary scholars overwhelmingly treat as impermissible - and being one step removed as the model builder rather than the trader does not change much, since the classical prohibition on assisting in a prohibited transaction reaches the people who make it possible. If your work is risk management, fraud detection, execution infrastructure, market data systems, or research into screened equities held over meaningful horizons, most of that is ordinary technical work applied to permissible activity. Most real quant roles sit somewhere between, which is why the honest answer requires auditing your own desk.

Employee equity and traded options are two different questions and get two different answers. An RSU is deferred compensation paid in shares - your employer promises to transfer shares once you complete a service period. That is a wage arrangement, and scholars generally permit it provided the company itself passes Shariah screening, because on vesting you simply own shares in that company. Employee stock options are harder: they give you a right to buy at a fixed price, and a right to buy is precisely what most contemporary scholars, AAOIFI and the International Islamic Fiqh Academy hold cannot be bought or sold as a standalone item. Many scholars nevertheless distinguish an option granted to you as part of your pay from an option traded in a market, permitting the first because you paid nothing for the right and are exercising it to acquire real shares. The decisive question in both cases is the company: if its primary business is impermissible, no structure fixes that.

Artificial intelligence is a tool, and tools take their ruling from their use. Nothing about generating text, images or code with a model is inherently impermissible, and scholars who have addressed AI-generated images have generally not placed them under the classical prohibition on image-making. Income from AI-assisted work is therefore ordinarily permissible. Three things change that. The first is what you produce: content promoting interest-based products, gambling, immodest imagery or falsehood is impermissible regardless of how it was made. The second is honesty about the work: taking payment for something a client reasonably believed a human researched or wrote, or submitting AI work as your own study or professional output, engages amanah and misrepresentation. The third is accuracy: publishing AI output on religious, medical or legal matters without verification spreads error at scale, and the responsibility for that sits with the publisher rather than the model.

Both are generally permissible. A notice period buyout is compensation for released obligations: you agreed to serve notice, you want to leave earlier, and you pay the employer an agreed sum to be released. That is a settlement, not a loan, and no charge for time is involved - so no riba. A signing bonus is advance payment of wages for work you have committed to perform, which is permitted; Islamic law allows wages to be paid before, during or after the work. A clawback requiring repayment if you leave early is likewise valid, because you are returning money for service you did not deliver. Two things change the analysis: an amount that is punitive rather than a genuine estimate of the employer's loss becomes exploitative rather than compensatory, and a clawback demanding more than you received - or that grows the longer repayment takes - reintroduces exactly the increase-for-time that riba prohibits.

Zakat is 2.5% of qualifying wealth you have held for one lunar year, paid only if that wealth is above the nisab threshold. The calculation has five steps: fix your zakat date, add up your zakatable assets, deduct debts that are due now, compare the net figure against nisab, and multiply by 2.5% if you are above it. The two things people get wrong are the date and the asset list. Zakat is owed on one specific day each lunar year, not on whatever you happen to hold in Ramadan, and the assets that count include gold, cash, shares, business stock and money owed to you, while your home, car and personal belongings are excluded. Interest sitting in your accounts is never part of the calculation - it is disposed of separately.

This is the single largest scholarly difference in ordinary zakat calculation, and for many Indian and South Asian families it changes the figure by more than half. The Hanafi school holds that zakat is due on all gold and silver including jewellery worn regularly, because the metal itself is wealth regardless of the form it takes. The Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali schools exempt jewellery kept for legitimate personal use, treating it like clothing rather than stored wealth. Both are long-established positions held by serious scholars, and neither is a modern concession. What is not disputed: jewellery held as an investment, gold kept as a store of value, and anything beyond reasonable personal use is zakatable on every position. If you follow a school, follow it. If you do not know, the Hanafi position is the more cautious one.
