Is EMI payment haram in Islam?

Because of what is being sold. In a deferred sale the seller owns goods and offers them at one price for cash and a higher price on credit - a single fixed total agreed at contracting that never changes. In an interest-bearing EMI, a lender advances money and you return more money; nothing is being sold, and the increase is purely the price of time. The distinction is between a sale on credit and a loan with an increase.

Two figures, both in writing. The cash price of the item. And the total of every payment you will make under the plan, including processing fees, documentation charges, insurance add-ons and anything else. If the second figure exceeds the first, you are paying for time. This single comparison resolves almost every EMI question people bring, and it takes one conversation with the seller.

Many contemporary scholars permit it where you genuinely pay exactly the cash price - the reasoning being that you have paid nothing extra for time, so no riba entered your transaction. A cautious minority notes that a loan contract with the bank still exists in the background. Both views agree on the test: verify the totals match, because a large share of no-cost offers reinstate the cost through a processing fee.
